Malfunctioning Irrigation Valves & Solenoids

Electrical issues - we got this!

Typically, sprinkler malfunctions fall into two categories: bad valves/solenoids and broken heads/sprinklers.

Valves [or "zones" if you're using more than one] are the devices that control water flow to specific parts of your lawn or garden. To do this, they use solenoids which open and close the ports where water flows in or out of a valve.

A malfunctioning solenoid can cause your zones to either not turn on at all or stay turned on too long. Types of valves include diaphragm valves, master valves, ball valves, rotary valves, gate valves, check valves...etc. There are several things that can go wrong as your sprinkler system ages or if it was installed improperly.

Components wear out

Components can wear out from water pressure, rust from being exposed to the elements, etc. If you have a multi-zone system [more than one valve], problems can arise if a solenoid malfunctions on a zone that has other valves downstream from it.

Solenoids are typically located inside your lawn, buried in a plastic box. Solenoids have between 2 and 4
wires coming out of them and they should be labeled to indicate which wire is positive (usually red) and which is negative (usually black). If you suspect that your solenoid might be malfunctioning, turn off the power at the breaker and call Andrew Cosh's Irrigation Service at 727-809-0596.

Life expectancy

Solenoids don't last forever and often start to fail after 5-10 years. Sprinkler system values have a life span of approximately 10 to 15 years. The wiring in your system however is subject to corrosion which can cause your system to fail. The constant heating and cooling of the wiring during the years will cause it to deteriorate, so you should have your system tested for voltage drop, shorts, or grounds every 2-3 years.
